As the leaves fall and temperatures drop your body naturally shifts to adapt to the new season. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Autumn is connected with the lungs, representing the body’s ability to take in fresh energy and release what no longer serves you.
The lungs are essential for immune defense, making this time of year a powerful time to focus on respiratory health and overall resilience. However, this season brings challenges that can weaken your lung function—like dry, cold air and seasonal stress. This makes it especially important to take extra care of your lungs.
To stay healthy through seasonal shifts, here are a few simple practices that I recommend:
- Daily Warm Teas: Sipping on teas with ingredients like ginger, licorice root, and honey can nourish the lungs and ease dryness.
- Breathwork & Meditation: Practicing deep, slow breathing can fortify lung function, calm the mind, and reduce stress. Click here if you’d like to join my weekly meditation group. We meet on Tues/Thurs mornings from 8:30-9am PT on zoom.
- Chinese Herbs: Unlike many Western medicines, which offer limited options for individualized responses, Chinese herbs can be adapted for each person’s unique needs, addressing issues from both a preventive and therapeutic angle.
- Acupuncture & Bodywork: Supporting the movement of blood and energy throughout the body is ideal to harness the body’s natural intelligence to heal.
What we eat really matters! Choose wisely and ensure food choices are nutrient-rich. Here’s what I like:
- Broth is medicine & hydration – Homemade is always better, and do what you can with chicken, meat, mushrooms, and/or anything you need to get rid of in your fridge. Broths enrich your blood/yin, lubricate your joints, and provide digestive aids.
- Spices – This season calls for warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise, and clove alongside cooked onions and garlic to help open the lungs and warm the body.
- Mushrooms – Join Ginny Brown and me for a Fungi extravaganza! We will be cooking, eating, & discussing in detail how to add more flavor and utilize these immune boosting foods into your recipes this season. Check out class details in the flyer below. Email me here to sign up.
